My Subscriptions

Today I sat down to calculate my subscription payments over the course of a year. I may have missed a few, but so far I get $2,305/year. I look at the subscriptions list and none, absolutely none of them are necessary at all. (Some may argue that the VoIP phone is necessary, but both my wife and I have mobile phones that we use as primary means of voice communications.). I can clearly say that over two grand in subscriptions is discretionary expenses scheduled to happen when ether I decide to make them or not.Am I happy with this? I think I am. One of the reasons of making the list is to decide how happy I am, how much benefit I am receiving out of this expenses, and if I want to keep them or not. I encourage people to write down on a piece of paper all of his/her subscriptions, calculate the monthly and yearly costs, and think about how appropriate they are.
Bear in mind that although these expenses are about $200/month, they represent $2305 a year. For a family earning $40,000 this would mean 5.8% of their pretax income, for one making $100,000/year it would be 2.3%, and for one making $200,000/year it would be 1.15%. It certainly have a very different impact on everybody’s lives and each person, and everyone should keep it in mind: live within your means.

This does not include insurance, electricity, water, car payments, mortgage payments, food or other things that people may think as necessary.One thing that I have noticed is that subscriptions keep accumulating. Maybe I should think about removing one subscription every time I want to add another one. Subscription leak money out one’s pocket – hopefully we can make them bring a fair amount of satisfaction and no debt.
