Life Too Short To Drink Bad Tasting Beer
May 1, 2007 | 2 Comments
Life is far too short to drink cheap beer. Unless, of course, that’s what you prefer. — FiveCentNickel.com in an article that invites debate.
I tend to agree on this advice, although I would change the “cheap” for “bad tasting” to make the argument simpler, as not everything that is cheap is bad. Beer (or wine for that matter) it is a luxury now (1). It is something you drink because you want to, not because you have to. I have seen people buy cheap drinks not because they are the ones they do enjoy the most, but because they are seen as “equivalent” to one another. I can only think that “equivalent” means same alcohol content – a view I see as dangerous and leading to addiction. To make my point clearer, when people worry about taste, they do not buy “Sams Soda” because it is equivalent to “Coca-Cola”, they do it because they like it more. People don’t even buy “Pepsi-Cola” as equivalent to “Coca-Cola”. People just buy the one they like, as all of them are luxury items.
If you are going to poison your body (either with excessive sugar, or alcohol), you might as well enjoy the process/taste – not (only) the effects.
How does this relates to money?
It relates a lot.
- First of all, you get into a mindset of not spending money if you are not going to fully enjoy it. You might end up discovering alternatives for your money that provide more satisfaction. Or you might end up reducing or avoiding extra debt. Maybe even avoiding some addiction.
- Secondly, it makes you be more efficient about money spending. Rather than spending $12 in three cheap beers and not have enjoyed a bit out of it, you spend the same $12 in two beers that you can enjoy while consuming. Your night will end up in a happier note – even if you are a tid bit closer to sobriety.
- Thirdly, by limiting consumption to just those things you like you make your life more efficient. For example: less soda sugar means less time at the treadmill in the gym to burn those calories. Less alcohol means waking up earlier to take care of more things in your life.
Does it sounds snobby?
I do not think so. Snobby is trying to feel you are living a life that is not real. Like people who consume cheap caviar just because they want to feel like the rich, even if they do not enjoy the taste (and the difference between the cheap one and the good one is from vomit inducing goo to nirvana). Some things that can’t be afforded are best left for those who can afford to consume while you consume the ones that you can enjoy the most.
(1) Wine and beer used to be a way of making a safe and tasty drink that would not spoil too fast (juice spoils without refrigeration, and in some places water might not have been safe to drink).

Great post. Although, as a professed beer snob, I could argue that the 2 beers you could get for $12 may have the tendency toward more alcohol content thus bringing you further away from sobriety. Especially if the beer is Belgian.
