The Big Flat Screen TV Family
June 29, 2007 | 1 Comment
Being a landlord is not as easy as people think. I once had a family occupying one of our rental units. The family is very nice, very polite, and trying to establish a good family. Financially, they are probably a mess. Payments consistently arrived late, sometimes more than a month late – even two months late. They did gave very heartbreaking stories on every payment – everything on the book: from job loss, to family deaths. I even believe the stories where real, they where just not prepared for life’s normal, even if unfortunate, issues. The interesting part is that during the almost three year tenant-ship I had to visit the unit several times. Over time, they did acquired very nice luxury items. New furniture sets, nice kitchen pots, pans, and accessories, and nice clothes. On my last visit they had recently acquired a 40-something inch flat screen TV!!!!
Now, granted, I must be the only guy in town without a big flat screen TV. The issue is not with having the TV, which surely sat them down for around $700 – $1000. It is with me not receiving the rent just because the guy at Best Buy convinced them that they needed a flat screen TV more than they needed to pay the rent!!!
Priorities… What a wonderful thing!

This was a funny/sad story. I am amazed by the lack of financial knowledge in this country. Sometimes people make the wrong choices on even the simplest decisions, such as buying a TV or paying for rent. I wonder how this mentality has been ingrained in part of some peoples’ lives.
