Turning a Recession Into An Opportunity

January 16, 2008 | Comments Off

There is no denying that recessions are not good for anyone. People and companies are cash strapped and are afraid because they do not know when things will get better. Recessions do not give any reasons to celebrate about them.

Recessions, however, provide opportunities. Proactive people pick up themselves from the sad feeling they bring and come up with ideas to make the best out of them for when the economy gets out of the recession. For example:

  • Provide Services – Companies are afraid of hiring someone. Nobody likes the idea of having to fire someone in the future if the economy or individual company earnings get worse. Temporary services, aligned with those things that may make a company grow are essential, and a lucrative thing to do.
  • Innovate – Necessity is the mother of invention (probably a gross translation of a Spanish cliche). You can create a product or service that solves inefficiencies, reduces costs, or increases margins. Recessions causes downtime – do not waste this downtime.
  • Government Handouts – People think that the government can save an economy. I doubt they can do too much about it – most of the time they do more damage than good. However, during a recession it is common for government at all levels to give economical incentives to stimulate the economy: start new business, expand business, hire people. Do not take them just for the sake of taking them. But if you have been holding off on a special investment for your business, watch for the opportunities.

What other opportunities may a recession bring?

Note: At this point I do not know if we are on a recession or not. I anticipate we already are, and we will come out of it in a few months. But whether we are on one or not, it is always a good idea to keep in mind what we will do if we fall into one.
