People are loosing their jobs, and they do not want them back!
March 7, 2008 |
Loosing your job used to be a terrible thing to happing. People used be afraid of the mere idea. It doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Today, we found an interesting statistic from the Labor Department: 63,000 jobs lost, but unemployment drops from 4.9% to 4.8%.
It is easy feel surprised. Less jobs, less unemployment. Shouldn’t it work the other way around? No, if people stop looking for a job. Now, I do not know about you, but if I needed money I would be looking for a job. It appears there are some people for which working is optional. Housemakers, rich people, young people living with parents, government benefits, disabled people, I guess I can make a long list of people for which working may be optional.
Nothing wrong with that. I just wonder what is better for the economy, to bring more people in the workforce, or to be in a society where more people feel it is optional to work?
Another interesting statistic by the Labor Department is unemployment by occupation. Fortunately mine is in the 2% range (fairly low). It is a convenient statistical analysis for people deciding which career they should choose based on job availability and stability. (Not everyone has to choose it based on those factors). Then again, I do not have a job - I am self employed.
