Getting Paid to Learn
March 25, 2008 | Comments Off
I recently started doing tutoring to college students in exchange for money. I do charge considerably less than my standard professional rate. However, the benefits surely go beyond the pay:
- Up To Date - The concepts in today’s software engineering courses (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering) are the same they where 15 years ago. The technologies used do change. I want to keep myself up to day and as sharp as the day I got out of school.
- We Need More Engineers – I have a vested interest in having more engineers in this country, and you should too. We need to be technologically advanced as a nation. We also need to move from a manufacturing society into a services society. Unfortunately very few people want to study these service producing careers. I want to help in some way.
- Use For Downtime – I do regularly reject offers for work that are below my hourly rate. I pass the opportunity forward, to someone else. I do so because I need to keep my rates at a level – otherwise my work becomes a commodity. However, this leaves me with some downtime. I plan to learn how to play golf in late spring. But for now, I should employ my time in something useful.
- Few Extra Dollars – Nobody can’t complaint about some extra beer money. It helps.
Consider tutoring as a way of re-sharpening your skills.
