You Either Produce or you Sell

Over the last few years I have discovered some truth about economics. Whatever you do in life, you have to make sure you are providing difficult to replace value. And the most value happens to be on:
- Production – Create a product or perform a service for which money can be charged: more money than it takes to produce. (Some technical support and technical services may fall into production, some may not).
- Sell – Sell a product of service produced by the “production” guys. Sell enough to pay for your salary, those in production, and all other business expenses your current endeavor requires. (Some marketting falls into sales, some doesn’t).
All other forms of gainful employment are at a higher risk of being outsourced or cut back – especially during economic slowdowns. All others are “support” people — performing tasks that can be subcontracted by the hour, or can be forced to be done by the necessary employees.
This doesn’t has to do anything with careers or degrees. It has to do with your purpose in your current situation. A corporate marketing person is at risk from being fired from a company, but a creative person at an advertisement firm may have a safer job – for he/she is needed to make money. A Lawyer or an Accountant may be fired from a big firm in difficult times, but will probably have a safer job at a successful law firm where they can charge for their services.
Learn to be a producer and a salesperson. Learn both and you will do fine.

[...] I have had some advantages, however. I did graduated from a career in high demand. Engineers, especially on the IT world can have a great salary just by graduating college. Most careers do not enjoy such an advantage. I know how to produce and work hard. I learned how to associate my work to things that sell. Another advantage: I am not afraid to sell – especially to sell what I can produce. Early in my career I got bored with the current production (engineering) task at that time and moved into pre-sales engineering (half produce half sales). I gained skills and confidence that allow me to sell – at least in a rudimentary way. (Produce and/or Sell) [...]
