Please Unemploy Me!!! (Unemployment soars to 5.5%)
June 6, 2008 |
I have been unemployed since early 2007 - and happy about it. Technically I can’t say I am unemployed: as they define an unemployed person as someone who is looking for a job — and I have stopped doing that, as they just fall into my lap.
That doesn’t say I am good: it just say that there is strong demand for some careers and low demand for others. And my career seems to be on the good side of the equation nowadays — as it has been for a couple of decades.
Today the unemployment rate soared to 5.5%. The dollar suffered. Oil climbed. My stocks will surely bleed. but as for my occupational rate (the number of days I am billing my dear clients), I really wish I would get some of this unemployment. Right now I am looking for people to offload my workload and I have found none.
Maybe it is time that people started moving into high demand careers and abandoned the low demand ones!

NOTE: A jump on unemployment may also mean that housemakers who where confortable with their occupation are now looking for jobs. It may also mean that people living on governement subsidies are looking for jobs. Or seniors that didn’t saved enough for retirement are looking for jobs. It is a meassure of how many people ask for a job, not how many people are employed at a particular point in time. One thing is for sure: a high unemployment rate makes it more difficult to get a high paying job for those in low-demand careers.
