Flexible Time Pittfalls
July 9, 2009 | Comments Off
Many companies give their employees the option to work a flexible time schedule instead of a 9 to 5 one. This is all good when the company operates in extended business hours (as in 7 to 7 or nights and weekends). However, for the traditional business world that still runs on a 9 to 5 schedule, this custom of working odd hours has some pitfalls to avoid.
- Can’t reach my coworker - if my work requires me to interact with other people, and to meet with them: then all of us have to work on the same schedule; at least those days when we need to meet with other people. At a minimum being available for conference calls during the hours that other people work.
- My coworker never sees me – common situation when one person works early schedules and the other late. This may lead to a situation where one of them doesn’t knows what the other one does. If no one knows what you are good for – don’t expect any promotions. You may need to reach out kore to your coworker if your working schedules don’t match. You may also need to advertise your value and the great things you have done with more intensity. You want to be perceived as valuable — working non-standard hours just makes this much more difficult and a higher priority.
- Think Green - if you really do not need to meet your coworker during all business hours, then your work may benefit from working from home. This does require a lot of discipline, the same one needed to work at strange hours. And it does require your boss to trust you and approve it – then again, if your boss does not trusts you enough to approve it, he/she may no see with good eyes that you work non-standard hours.
