I am bored: I can do my daily job in 2 hours!

I have heard from many people: I can do my daily job in 2 hours. That is one of the reasons many people arrive late to work, leave early, and spend so much time on facebook or shopping on amazon.com. I know it, because I have been in that situation at some point in my life (not at this time).
This situation is not as good as it sounds:
- You may not be doing all you should be doing. Are you sure you have done everything that is expected of you? Have you missed anything?
- Your boss has low expectations. He/she may not know about all of your potential. That means he/she may not see you as a more valuable ($$) member of the team. No value, no raise.
- You may be on the wrong job. Maybe you should find a job where there is more pay — in exchange for the kind of value you could be providing in 8 hours, instead of the 2 you work.
- It looks plain bad. People know you are surfing facebook — even if you try to hide it by turning the monitor the other way — it shows on your face. Gives you a bad reputation. Puts you on top of the layoff list.
- You are not learning the skills needed for advancement. Every day you don’t work out, somebody else does. (It appeared on a law enforcement office wall, with a picture of an inmate working out on a government provided gym). Every day you do not learn something new, someone else is… and that person will be your boss in a few years.
- Your brain is getting lazy. Once you have been on the 2 hour workday habit, it is difficult to turn around and start doing 8.
What should I do?
- Advertise your value. Promote better use of your time.
- Change positions or jobs.
- Find good use for that time — learning the skills that you need for the position you want. Either you gain experience by doing the task, or you take advantage of tuition reimbursement programs.
- If you are all that good that you can do your job in 2 hours… Can you offer two companies to do the same job as a freelancer? That would mean you only have to work 4 hours a day for double the take home pay. Doesn’t sound feasible? Maybe there is something wrong on the calculations — yours or mine.
